Acid soak doesn't remove scale from hot roll. It also doesn't reduce a zinc (galvanize) plate to safe levels to use for food. Hot roll scale is simply an oxidation layer you want to remove by sanding then wire wheel down to the raw steel. Apply animal or vegetable oil to season. Personally, I use lard in my cast iron.
Mechanical descaling processes (Fig 1) normally include processing by (i) reverse bending deformation, (ii) shotblasting, and (iii) combination of reverse bending and shot blasting. These processes are normally used for the removal of scale from the steel rods in the steel rod drawing industry. Fig 1 Mechanical descaling processes.
Pumping the scale away from the point where it falls eliminates the need for a scale pit in the milling area and opens up for alternatives in scale removal. Three options present themselves for slurry treatment: a screw dewaterer, magnetic separator or cyclone.
The method comprises adding nonionic surfactants to steel mill scale pit water. Preferably, the nonionic surfactant is added to the scale pit water, ahead of the scale pit. ... Metal and amine removal promoting additives in refined desalting USA (en) : Process for deoiling mill scale USA1 (en) ...

Oil removal from scale pits requires oil skimming equipment that is efficient and durable to work continuously and effectively in the harsh environment of a steel mill. Operational Considerations The steel mill engaged an engineering firm to design a new type of scale pit at their facility.
Apr 21st 2022 If you're a welder or metalworker, mill scale is something to definitely look out for. All types of steel can develop residual mill scale from production. Its presence can contribute to corrosion and can ruin a weld, so it needs to be removed before working with the steel.
Zero Scale Pit (screw type): this solution will save the cost of about 900 cm of civil construction and will avoid the usual large and deep underground pit needed to settle the scale. The Zero Scale Pit concept is based on simple, skidmounted equipment with a screw to remove and collect the scale outside the plant.
Contact Sciphyn Using Sciphyn, steel mills do not have to shut down to remove mill scale and sludge. In this video, see how we removed 51 rolloff boxes of sludge from this settling basin in 15 days. Project Summary Sludge Removed: 1,395 cubic yards / 612 tons Project Duration: 15 days Days Plant Shut Down: ZERO Confined Space Entries: ZERO
In a process to remove oil from scale pit water held in a collecting pit or tank, the novelty is that: (a) the water which is discharged from the scale gully flows tangentially into the collecting tank to generate a slight slow motion; (b) the incoming water migrates to a mechanicallycalmed oil collection zone (4) where it resides for a while thus facilitating subsequent skimming; (c) removal ...
There's a nice piece of 5/8" hotrolled in the shop that I want to use for a welding table. It's covered about 50/50 with rust, some pretty thick, and black, hard mill scale. Sliding a block of concrete back and forth grinds the rust down until it's only left in the deeper pits, which is fine, but it doesn't touch the mill scale.
Thus mill scale can be removed from steel surfaces by flame cleaning, pickling, or abrasive blasting, which are all tedious operations that consume energy.
to atmospheres containing oxidizing gases which results in scale formation. Inefficient removal of the formed scale during reheating affects product surface quality. The effect of steel composition and operating parameters on scale formation and scale removal efficiencies were investigated. Experimental investigations were
Shot Blasting, a method used to clean, strengthen and polish metal, is a fast and costeffective way to remove mill scale. This service is normally carried out to prepare the surface of steel before applying any coating. Having the steel prepared by shot blasting is generally considered to be the most important factor affecting any corrosion ...

High pressure is applied during the hot heat treatment to clean the steel and remove mill scales. This also stops the steel's surface from acquiring defects in finished items. The product is finally chilled, and the working staffs make sure to manage the steel's cooling rate to rectify the steel's microstructure and crystallization ...
Mill scale is the flaky surface of hot worked steel and is formed by the oxidation of the steel surface during reheating, conditioning, hot rolling, and hot forming operations. It is one of the wastes generated in steel plants and represents around 2 % of the produced steel. It is a hard brittle coating of several distinct layers of iron oxides ...
One of the most common ways to strip steel from mill scale is chemical removal. A thorough way of removing that also works very quickly and efficiently. When the mill scale is chemically cleaned, the layer is dissolved in acid often hydrochloric, phosphoric or oxalic acid.
