I have 16 5055# sacks of grain plus specialty grains through my CK mill and havent needed to take it apart, clean it or readjust the gap.. The only time Ive touched the gap settings was for efficiency reasons. If your Barley crusher is still working with regular use Id consider yourself lucky.

The gap was back to factory setting. I tightened it back down to my preferred .030 gap. Will remain to be seen how long that oring lasts with that gap setting. Ran 9 lbs of grain through without a hitch. Picked up the grain and took off, crushed perfectly, no issue. I have to say I'm pretty pleased with performance of the unit now.

thanks to both of you. the barley crusher has a 5lb hopper on it that I'm guessing governs the rate at which barley actually reaches the mill. I've been using the same drill at the fastest speed of the lower setting. in other words the drill has 60 settings, 30 speeds per gear?.

In my case, consistency has nothing to do with it. The LHBS uses the same mill that I have (JSP) and give a good grind. But the LHBS is a 60+ mile round trip from home. With a Barley Crusher you can't change the gap without loosening/tightening two set screws, so you can't adjust it on the fly, unfortunately. My drill has two settings "1" or "2" and I think 1 is 400rpm so I was using that. The barley crusher site mentions this, so that is why I thought 400rpm was ok (and has seriously been awesome for months arg):

The bag looked about equal to 34 pounds of malt. So I changed the amount of rice hulls in the recipe from 8ozs to 4ozs, as 4ozs worth would fill a 1lb Maillard Malt bag quite full indeed. In the end, the 4ozs of rice hulls worked beautifully with the quality of crush I get from the Barley Crusher Malt Mill.

The optimal gap will be affected by the knurling specific to each mill, so a reliable "standard" probably can't exist. If one has a mill, it usually comes with a recommended gap, a good place to start. fwiw, the recommended gap on the infamous Barley Crusher is .039". Cheers!
